Yeah if you know what you're doing with Linux. Know how that whole fad started? By professional Systems Admins who went to school for it, and know a lot about Linux. Linux is indeed bloody good, don't get me wrong. But for the normal users... it's just too much work to get it working just the way you like. Stick to OSx, or WinXP Pro.

im only 14 and Linux Works just the way I like 80% of the time, which is fine.

The only problem im having right now is GW, cus It won't detect my graphics card.
(ATi HD 2400, seems to be a bitch)
but I'll fix that eventually I guess.

Anyways I know 3 people who have switched from Vista to linux
They're happier and smarter.

Which distro you running, champ?

But your video card problems is just another example I'm talking about. Drivers don't work the same in Linux.

Ubuntu ^.^ I like it.
Although Open Suse is kinda fun too

Anyways thats just the ATI HD 2400 I swear it has to be.

Because an Nvidia Card will work (it worked on my lower spec computer running linux)

ATI just blows >.>

Ah hah! uubuntu. It's like Linux lite. :P

Try Fedora, or one of Sun's fun little Unix packages. They're a blast! Tons of stuff on the interwebs about ems.

Nothing wrong with Vista. Stop being a sheep, and spreading the hate.

I like you got a nice new laptop which had vista installed by default. I was suspicious of vista before getting the laptop, but I got a great deal on it so i figured, what the heck I'll try it.

Initially i was wowed by how pretty vista was, although the flaws quickly came out, it started wtih small things bothering me about vista itself, so many useless features, so much unecessary crap, but then I started monitoring my laptop's performance. Call me old fashioned but I prefered it when Microsoft Word didn't use 70% of a Centrino Core 2 Duo processor. Unfortunately the slow performance was just the beginning.

My vista had a terrible glitch when playing music, near the end of every song, if there was another song to be played afterwards, the song would stop and skip for the last 10-20 seconds of the song. This was the big one that really got me peeved at vista, what kind of OS lags out when playing an mp3?!?

And I found myself very quickly frustrated with the excessive amount of redudant popups vista has, I was asked no less than 3 times if I really wanted to install anything, change any system setting, or generally do anything of any significance on the computer.

Eventually the problems started adding up and after discovering that over half of the software (and hardware) I wanted to put on my laptop was incompatable with vista I decided I'd had enough.

I did some research and "downgraded" (felt like more of an upgrade to me) to XP. I'm now happily using XP on my laptop, with much better performance than I got with vista.

The scarriest thing of all however was what I learned about vista while doing research on how to switch back to XP. Vista is extremely clingy. and not in a cute way either, I had to go in and disable specific files on vista before it would allow me to even begin to install XP. And I've heard some horror stories of what happens when you put both systems on the same computer....just don't do it.

Sorry to freak you out, maybe you'll have better luck with vista than I. but after dealing with Vista the next time I upgrade to a new OS it isn't going to be one made by Microsoft.
Oh man this sounds really crap i was hoping Vista would be all perfect and pretty. Guess i was wrong lol. I will get my laptop tmr(i hope) and i will do some testing with vista, but i read that just running a vent server on it is already a pain in the ass jsut because you are not a god anymore like in XP.

But that mp3 glitch you had sounds familiar. i think that you could change some settings in WMP so that at X seconds before the end of a song it would start to play the next song real quietly in the background and it gets louder the closer it gets to finishing th previous song. And you can change the time when it start that i think. But i might be wrong.

And i have to agree with Linux here used it before is started playing GW for 3 years. Used gentoo as my distro. Its seriously the best one out there but the learning curve to get into it is even greater than a pve player trying to get into pvp lol. I spent weeks on figuring out how to get my wireless to work But it was all good fun. Once i got to the graphics card well i got it working but the Linux Drivers were crap to say the least(ATI user here). And i could barely play Quake 3 Arena. So when GW came out i changed back to 2 OS systems and it slowly changed back to Windows fully just cos Excel wasnt really supported on Linux and i had to use it on a daily basis while always swapping files with other people.
Is Linux any better these days? Might give it a try in a years time when all the Hardware on my new laptop is supported^^

Linux is much better, than 3 years ago.

The thing is, ATI drivers are VERY iffy on linux

Nvidia drivers will rarely give you problems in linux, thankfully.
So if your getting back into linux at any time you may want to put a nice 58 or so dollars into a nvidia card (which I plan to >.> if I can get some money).

With WINE now better than ever before, GW is operational on Linux, the thing is Vent may be a little difficult to set up, but as far as I know its quite possible, I've had it running before, I just don't know how to use Vent >.>

Also GW runs on all debian Distro's I believe and quite a few others I think.
Couldn't get it to work on openSuse though....but I blame KDE...for everything =P

Also Open Office isn't good enough for you???

First of Open Office sucks BIGTIME ,Well at least the Spreadsheet part. The word bit cos i was able to write nifty formula way before MS word could ever do that. But i changed to some Latex package cos that was even more fun^^

And yeah ATI has always been bad and i presume its still bad now. Luckily my new lappie does have an nvidia card^^ so i might give it a go.
Also i heard KDE 4.0 is coming out? Kinda looking forward to that and might check on it from time to time.

But sadly i will always have to resort to MS products to some degree, beacause my studies require alot of programs that are jsut not available on Linux and probably will never be either

Meh if you need windows so be it.

Still think anyone with windows should be dual booting a linux Parition on their drive too.

No they know Vista is not worth it just like we do.
Honestly, many things have not been configured for Vista and thus XP is better for them. Why go to some OS upgrade if it makes things you own turn to shit?

1) Dual Boot? If you have the windows CD and a LInux CD, put em both on your CPU. If you think your going to heavily rely on Windows then just put like 20 maybe 30 gigs on linux.

2) www.winehq.com
3) http://appdb.winehq.org Notice Which Game is on the Gold list.

And a good Itunes replacement is Amarok.

Not true, some distro's are a bit harder to learn.
Ubuntu is fairly easy and may take you a week to get the basics (or a day if you spend something like 4 hours on your computer)
